Import Export Code (IEC) Registration in India

Your PAN-based IEC from the DGFT — a 10-character alphanumeric code that is now identical to your PAN — expertly filed, transparently priced, and kept compliant year after year by Startup Pandit.

Overview

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is now PAN-based — since the DGFT's February 2021 reform, the IEC is issued as, and is identical to, the entity's Permanent Account Number (PAN): a 10-character alphanumeric code such as ABCDE1234F, not a separate string of ten numeric digits. One IEC is issued against one PAN and it carries lifetime validity, with no renewal in the traditional sense. The code is quoted on customs documents, shipping bills and bank remittance paperwork, making it the foundational registration for cross-border trade.

IEC registration in India is relevant to a wide range of businesses — sole proprietors testing a first export order, e-commerce sellers shipping by courier or post, manufacturers importing raw material, trading houses, service exporters seeking foreign trade benefits, and companies scaling globally. Whether you operate as a proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, HUF, trust or society, the code is issued in the entity's name against its PAN.

Getting the Import Export Code right at the outset prevents expensive delays later. A mismatched name, wrong address or unlinked bank account can hold a consignment at customs or block an export incentive. Just as important, every IEC must be electronically confirmed on the DGFT portal each year between April and June, even when nothing has changed, or it is deactivated. Startup Pandit handles both the application and these ongoing formalities so your trade never stalls on a technicality.

Why it matters
  • 01

    Trade legally across borders

The IEC is mandatory to clear goods through Indian customs for both import and export. Without it, banks will not process your import or export (trade) remittances and freight forwarders cannot file shipping bills on your behalf.

  • 02

    One code, lifetime validity

Because the IEC is PAN-based — the code is identical to your entity's 10-character alphanumeric PAN — a single code serves your entity for its lifetime and never expires. You avoid repeated fresh registrations; the only recurring formality is the annual electronic update on the DGFT portal.

  • 03

    Unlocks export benefits and schemes

A valid IEC is the gateway to foreign trade incentives such as RoDTEP, duty drawback and Advance Authorisation, and to registration with Export Promotion Councils. Exporters cannot claim these benefits without it.

  • 04

    Fully online, paperless process

The application is filed digitally on the DGFT portal and e-signed through Aadhaar OTP or a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate. There is no need to submit physical files or visit any government office.

  • 05

    Credibility with global partners

Overseas buyers, suppliers and payment platforms often ask for your IEC as proof that you are a recognised participant in India's foreign trade. A valid code smoothens onboarding with banks, marketplaces and logistics partners.

Eligibility

Who it's for.

  • Any individual or entity holding a valid PAN can apply — proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, private limited and one-person companies, HUFs, trusts and societies.
  • A bank account in the name of the applicant entity — current or savings. Foreign-transaction (forex) capability is not itself a condition for obtaining the IEC; it is enabled separately through AD (Authorised Dealer) Code registration with your bank and customs.
  • A business address in India supported by valid ownership or tenancy proof.
  • Anyone importing goods into India for commercial purposes must hold an IEC.
  • Anyone exporting goods, or claiming DGFT or customs export benefits, must hold an IEC.
  • Service exporters generally need an IEC only to avail benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
  • Only one IEC is issued per PAN; personal, non-trade imports and exports and certain notified categories are exempt.
Documents required

What you'll need.

  • 01PAN card of the applicant entity (and of the proprietor, in a proprietorship)
  • 02PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, as applicable
  • 03Passport-size photograph and identity proof of the authorised signatory
  • 04Cancelled cheque or a bank certificate showing the entity's account number and IFSC
  • 05Proof of business address — electricity bill, rent agreement or property document
  • 06No Objection Certificate from the owner, if the premises are rented
  • 07Certificate of Incorporation, Partnership Deed or LLP Agreement, as per entity type
  • 08GSTIN, if the entity is registered under GST
  • 09Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate, or Aadhaar linked to a mobile number for OTP e-signing
  • 10Active mobile number and email address for DGFT portal registration
  • 11Board resolution or authorisation letter for the signatory, for companies and LLPs
The process

How it works, step by step.

  1. Step 01

    Consultation and eligibility check

We understand your business structure, goods or services, and trade plans to confirm that IEC is the right registration for you. We also flag any related approvals you may need alongside it.

  2. Step 02

    Document collection and verification

Our team gathers your PAN, address proof, bank details and entity documents through a simple checklist. Each is verified against DGFT norms to eliminate the mismatches that cause most rejections.

  3. Step 03

    DGFT portal and e-sign setup

We register your entity on the DGFT portal using your PAN, mobile and email. E-signing is then set up via Aadhaar OTP or a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate.

  4. Step 04

    Filing the online application (ANF-2A)

We complete the IEC application with your entity, address, bank and signatory details and upload the supporting documents. Every field is cross-checked against your PAN and bank records.

  5. Step 05

    Fee payment and submission

The prescribed government application fee is paid online and the application is submitted to the DGFT. You receive an application reference number to track its progress.

  6. Step 06

    IEC issuance and handover

On approval, the DGFT issues your digitally signed IEC on the portal — the same 10-character alphanumeric code as your PAN. We hand over the certificate, your login credentials and a short guide on using the code.

  7. Step 07

    Annual-update briefing

We explain the mandatory April to June annual update, set a reminder and, if you wish, manage it for you. This keeps your new IEC active from its very first year.

Timeline & cost

What to expect.

In most cases we file a complete, correctly prepared IEC application within one to two working days of receiving your documents. The DGFT typically issues the code within a few working days thereafter, subject to government processing, and the exact time cannot be guaranteed. Delays most often arise from mismatched details or address proof that needs correction.

Your total outlay has two distinct parts. The first is the government or statutory fee charged by the DGFT for the IEC application — a fixed, nominal amount paid online directly to the department. The second is Startup Pandit's professional fee for preparing, verifying and filing your application and guiding you through issuance.

Professional fees vary with the complexity of your case — whether a Digital Signature Certificate must be procured, whether bank or address documents need extra work, or whether related registrations are bundled in. We confirm a full, all-inclusive quote upfront, keeping government charges and our service fee clearly separate, with no hidden costs later.

The annual IEC update — the compliance founders forget

Because the IEC has lifetime validity and no expiry date, many founders treat it as 'register once and forget'. That assumption is the most common and costly mistake. Since the DGFT modernised the system, every holder must log in and electronically confirm or update their IEC once a year, in the window between April and June — even when there is nothing to change.

If the update is not filed in time, the DGFT deactivates the IEC. A deactivated code cannot clear consignments or process foreign remittances, which can freeze a live shipment and stall payments. Reactivation is possible online once the pending update is completed, but the disruption in the meantime is entirely avoidable.

It also helps to clear a related misconception: the IEC is not a tax registration, does not replace GST, and does not by itself create any tax liability. It is purely an identification and enablement number for foreign trade — since 2021 it is simply your entity's PAN doubling as its trade code. Startup Pandit tracks the annual window and files the confirmation on time, so your code never lapses on a forgotten date.

After registration

What follows — and how we keep you compliant.

  • Electronically update or confirm your IEC on the DGFT portal every year between April and June — even if nothing has changed — to keep it active.
  • Update the DGFT record promptly whenever your address, bank account, constitution or authorised signatory changes.
  • Obtain and register your AD (Authorised Dealer) Code with your bank and customs at each port you trade through — this is what enables forex and trade transactions on your account.
  • Maintain GST compliance on imports and exports, including correct reporting of zero-rated export supplies.
  • Keep organised records of shipping bills, invoices and remittances to support export-benefit claims.
  • Keep bank and customs records consistent with your IEC details to avoid remittance or clearance holds.
  • Reactivate the IEC through the portal promptly if it is deactivated for a missed annual update.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Is IEC registration mandatory for all importers and exporters?+

An IEC is mandatory to import or export goods commercially and to claim most export benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. Limited exemptions exist, such as goods moved for personal use unconnected to trade and certain notified government categories. Many service providers need an IEC only when availing foreign trade benefits.

How long does it take to get an IEC in India?+

A correctly prepared application is usually filed within one to two working days of receiving your documents, and the DGFT typically issues the code within a few working days after submission, subject to government processing. The exact timeline cannot be guaranteed. Mismatched address or bank details are the most common cause of delay.

Does the IEC need to be renewed every year?+

The IEC itself has lifetime validity and does not expire, so there is no traditional renewal. However, you must electronically confirm or update it on the DGFT portal every year between April and June, even if nothing has changed. Missing this window leads to deactivation.

Can a sole proprietor or individual obtain an IEC?+

Yes. Any individual or entity with a valid PAN and a bank account in that name can obtain an IEC, including sole proprietors and freelancers. Since the code is now issued as the entity's PAN itself, a proprietor's IEC is the same 10-character alphanumeric code as their personal PAN.

Is IEC the same as GST registration?+

No. The IEC is a foreign-trade identification number issued by the DGFT, while GST is a separate tax registration serving a different purpose. Holding an IEC creates no GST liability by itself, though depending on your activity you may need both.

How many IEC codes can one business have?+

Only one IEC is issued per PAN, so a single entity holds one code covering all its branches, divisions and units. If you inadvertently hold more than one, the duplicates should be surrendered to the DGFT.

What happens if my IEC is deactivated?+

An IEC is usually deactivated for missing the annual April to June update. While deactivated, it cannot be used for customs clearance or foreign remittances. You can reactivate it online by completing the pending update, and Startup Pandit can handle this promptly for you.

Do I need a Digital Signature Certificate for IEC registration?+

Not always. The application can be e-signed with an Aadhaar OTP sent to your registered mobile number, in which case no DSC is needed. A Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate is nonetheless useful, and often preferable for companies and LLPs, and we arrange one where required.
